I'm writing as one of your constituents, and as a driver who gets my car through my employer. I want to raise a problem with how electric company car tax is being set, because it's making it much harder to plan for my next car. The issue is certainty. Company car and salary sacrifice schemes are how most drivers get into new cars, including electric ones, but they only work if people can trust the numbers for the length of the lease. Right now we only know Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rates up to 2029/30, and even within that window the rate is set to more than double, from 4% to 9%. Most leases run three to four years, so anyone signing up today is committing to years the Government hasn't confirmed. I need to know the rate won't rise above 9% once it gets there in 2029/30, and I need that certainty extended well beyond that date. I also want salary sacrifice itself protected, since it's the main route that has brought electric cars within reach of ordinary drivers rather than just the highest earners. Without that certainty, I can't plan my own costs properly. That matters beyond just me: company car and fleet drivers are Britain's biggest source of new car and van sales, and manufacturers size their investment around that demand. Car makers are already committing serious money to electric vehicle production, and they only back factory lines and supplier contracts when they can see demand holding steady for years, not just one Budget cycle. If drivers like me can't plan our costs with confidence, that demand gets harder to predict, and manufacturers have less reason to build here rather than elsewhere. I'd be grateful if you could raise this with HM Treasury on my behalf. What I need from Government is simple: hold company car tax at 9%, no higher, and protect salary sacrifice. This is one of the issues being raised through the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), and their policy team (policy@bvrla.co.uk) is meeting MPs on this at the moment. It would mean a lot to have your support. Yours sincerely,
